Southern Oregon Decorative Artists is an independent club founded in 2023 as a continuation of Siskiyou Decorative Artists which was founded in 1992. We meet monthly at the Live Oak Grange in Rogue River, Oregon.
Decorative Painting is defined as a method of painting designs on any object to decorate. Application follows an orderly procedure and a pattern is customarily used to apply the design. Because of the systematic methods employed, contemporary decorative painting is a highly teachable art form. The patterns or designs allow a high degree of success without academic training or inherent drawing ability. Approached with creativity, discipline and craftsmanship, contemporary decorative painting offers opportunities for artistic self-expression and creative satisfaction.
It is a diverse art form that utilizes a variety of techniques and media. The scope of contemporary decorative painting is boundless. Styles & techniques of the past are incorporated into the trends & materials of the present. In recent years, decorative painting has replaced the older term of tole painting. Decorative painting uses various mediums - acrylic, oils, watercolors and colored pencils, and is done on a variety of surfaces such as wood, canvas, paper, glass, metal and more.
We at SODA come together to build friendships and share the love of our craft. Our club wishes to stimulate an interest in decorative painting and to recognize diversity of and excellence of the art form.
We hold monthly meetings at which projects using a variety of mediums and at various skill levels are taught. We urge anyone interested in decorative painting to join us in developing their talents and skills.
